The horizon was clear, the stars were bright, but the lights Aziz had been told to follow, the ones that would guide him into the city, were not there. He could see the lights and hear the sounds of combat, but they came from the east. There were no cities to the west, only along the coast. The division was supposed to be heading toward the coast. The brigade commander climbed off the back of the bulldozer and stood to the side of the berm. Surely there was a change of orders. Maybe the commander did not transmit them to maintain radio silence.

“Drive toward the stars shining in Jidda’s belt,” Aziz told his driver over the tank intercom. The driver started forward. As they went through the breach in the berm, the brigade commander stood at the side and shouted encouragement as his men passed.
